Business Profile: Innovative Golf Clinics Match Local Pros with Interactive Technology

By Susan Regier

Golfers know that the most important tool on the golf course is their body. So to ensure enthusiasts are in top form, two local pros, Bob Martin and Ron Lampman from Golf Unleashed, and certified Yoga for Golfers™ teacher, Tina Gokstorp from OsoYoga, are teaming up with Golf Without Limits at the Bob Martin Golf Centre, 3341 Wonderland Road South, London for a series of unprecedented golf clinics to be held in June and July.

"I've been in most areas of the golf industry in both Canada and the US for more than forty years,” said Bob Martin, a well-known golf personality who has captivated audiences from coast to coast with his demonstrations and teaching clinics. “This is the best combination of golf entertainment, fitness, and instruction that I have ever seen or experienced. If you are sincerely looking to make your game the best it can be, this is where you want to be."

A series of three Golf Performance Clinics that cover all aspects of the game will be held for juniors (age 7 – 14) and masters (55 & up) on July 2, 9, and 16; and a women’s clinic (14+) on July 5, 12 and 19. Plus, Ron Lampman, who competed at the World Longdrive Championships in Nevada and finished third at the 2006 Word Golf Trickshot championships, will lead a Power & Distance workshop on June 22, 2008. Participants will learn how to gain power and distance in their shots through increased flexibility for a better swing, more power on impact, increased focus, and improved stability.

“The finest players in the world are incorporating the Katherine Roberts’ Yoga for Golfers™ program as part of their fitness regime. This highly specialized program has been featured on the Golf Channel and ESPN's Hank Haney Signature Golf Schools for a reason,” said Gokstorp. “Stability, focus, flexibility, and a healthy back significantly contribute to how well you play. We help our students understand how the foundations of yoga have a specific correlation to their score on the course."

These clinics will cover all aspects of the swing – the long game, the short game, chipping, putting, and bunker play. And with Golf Without Limits’ cutting edge technology, including its tectonic force plates, Doppler radar systems, and ultrasound analyzers, everything you never wanted to know about your game can be measured from the horizontal launch angle of your drive to the spin on your putt. The innovative visual feedback gives instant insight into the golf swing that is easy to understand.

Never before has such an impressive roster of pros joined forces with revolutionary technology for an amazing suite of services in one place. These clinics will forever change the way the game is played.

Business Profile – Smile-Therapy: Ordinary People Share Wisdom that Rivals Dr. Phil

By Susan Regier

Tim Smith is combating people’s spiraling negative attitudes by bringing more smiles to the world with Smile-Therapy. After ten years of research, Smith launched Smile-Therapy.com, a Web based portal that lightens the outlook of its readers. It contains two paths to good cheer and lightheartedness: a daily positive email message and a comprehensive online Library of Wisdom, a direct line to a positive outlook written by and for the readers.

A former mortgage broker, Smith asked his online audience two questions – if they would like more good news in their life and if they would like to have access to thousands of tips, wisdom, and insights from people around the world. The answer to both was a resounding “yes,” and Smith delivered the dynamic concept with global reaches.

“Smile-Therapy is fresh, uplifting, information packed, and easy to navigate,” said Smith. “Readers are sharing ideas, family secrets and remedies, and tips on a range of 20 topics from parenting and investing to entertainment and hobbies. In essence, a plethora of wisdom and useful information from all reaches of the world.”

For more than fifteen years, Smith kept a well-worn mantra above his car visor, which he read faithfully each day: “Help others, work hard, have fun, and make people smile.” And now he’s turned that mantra into reality by bringing a smile to readers each day…and it’s working. On May 4, 2008, Smile-Therapy.com was voted the number one site from CoolSiteoftheday.com. Their goal is to have 5,000 subscribers within three years.

The concept of Smile-Therapy has been in the works since the mid nineties. “This is not your typical inspirational quote of the day that arrives in your inbox. Each day brings something different,” said Smith. “It could be a household tip, a way to make or save money, an interesting Web site, good news, quizzes and brain teasers, or simply cool ideas and concepts. The ideas are pouring in from around the world. We’re really learning and benefiting from each other.”

When Smith asked for information and wisdom that worked, the response was huge. He has developed a massive Library of Wisdom, which can be accessed by subscribers. For example, a Floridian shares how best to deal with severe sunburn while an Alaskan native sent in his experience of keeping warm in minus thirty degree temperatures. Another reader explained how to easily eliminate mosquitoes from the patio. The Library is growing daily as people continue to share. “We like to refer to it as ‘the best of people.’ Wisdom does not have to come from Dr. Phil, it is arriving in droves from ordinary people," said Smith.

A subscription to Smile-Therapy.com is available for only $5.00 per month or $55.00 annually. It allows complete access to the Library of Wisdom, the daily email archive, and the positive daily email message.

Smith asks us to consider this, “Picture 5000 people in one room, sharing their best ideas and all time favorite concepts. How much can we learn from each other?” Just thinking about it brings him a smile. For more information, visit www.smile-therapy.com.

Profile: Breast Friends Break Down Boundaries

By Susan Regier

Your Breast Friends for Health is London, Ontario’s only integrated approach to complementary health therapies for women including hormonal balance and breast health, cleansing and detoxifying, nutrition, weight loss, homeopathic medicine, natural skin care products and treatments. Five local health care professionals, who advocate a drug-free approach to breast and hormonal health, work together from the Thermography Clinic, 140 Oxford St. East, Suite 309, London.

Co-founders Patricia Kennedy and Rebecca Liston coined the term “Breast Friends” while speaking to a group of women about breast health…and the term stuck. They both had a dream of creating a place where women would be comfortable and to remove redundancies from seeking help with various practitioners.

“Our vision was to form a centre where women could put together as many pieces of their health puzzle as possible,” said Liston. “We wanted one location that connected various modalities of alternative health.”

Because of their medical backgrounds – Kennedy, a registered nurse and Director of Clinical Services at Thermography Clinic London, and Liston, a homeopathic physician and ultrasound technologist who operates a general family clinic – they support both natural and mainstream medicine…and the freedom to choose the best approach for each individual.

“We’re here to educate and support women in what often can be a stressful time in their lives,” said Kennedy. “Every woman needs a Breast Friend – someone she can trust to answer her most intimate questions and for support and empowerment to make the choice that best suits her wellness needs.”

Other practitioners include Melissa Henderson, registered massage therapist; Donna Costa, a registered homeopath, nutritional consultant, and Laughter Yoga teacher; and Lynda Carlson, a certified aesthetician, anti-aging specialist, and reiki master.

The team from Your Breast Friends for Health can be heard on Radio Western CHRW 94.9FM’s weekly Holistic Health Hour where they openly discuss butts, boobs, nutrition, libido, and other hot topics that women really do want to talk about. For more information, visit their Web site at www.breastfriendsforhealth.com.

Profile: Searching for Sitters Simplified

By Susan Regier

Searching for the perfect childcare provider has been simplified with the recent launch of the London Caregivers Referral Network’s online database. Within days, more than 100 homecare providers in and around London registered at www.londoncaregivers.com. Now parents can easily find an ideal match to meet their family’s needs through this unique Web site catering to the London community.

London Caregivers connect parents and providers through an extensive interactive database. Parents can streamline their search to focus only on caregivers matching their personal criteria, with consideration to location, age, language preference, full time or part time, shift work or weekend care, and environmental concerns regarding smoking and pets. Police checks and First Aid/CPR training are also specified.

“We’re here to help busy working families who do not have the time or experience to find a home daycare provider or nanny on their own,” said Sabina Manji, owner of the London Caregivers Referral Network and publisher of The Mom & Caregiver Magazine. “The perfect caregiver may be just around the corner, but parents usually don’t realize it."

Home daycare providers register online for free and are categorized by location and services provided. A dynamic mapping process divides the city by postal codes while outlining street boundaries to expedite the process. A trial search gives parents the number of available matches within those boundaries. They can then opt to pay a minimal fee of $40.00, which gives them full details of the providers plus unlimited searches for ninety days. It is then up to the parents to follow through with their due diligence – they must meet the homecare providers and check references.

On average, childcare needs change every six to nine months as people move or their situations change. “The demand for an up-to-date resource is huge,” said Manji. “Parents have been thrilled with how easy it is to narrow their search and find the perfect connection.”

Since 1997, London Caregivers Referral Network has been helping local parents in their quest to find the perfect caregiver for their children, whether it’s home daycare providers, interviewing and hiring nannies, or locating temporary or last minute childcare. The innovative childcare registry has been profiled in Canadian Living and on CBC Marketplace.

Business Profile: Web Site Provides Online Community for the Disabled

By Susan Regier

In only one year, SoulfulEncounters.com has evolved from a Web-based dating connection into a life-asserting online community. With chat rooms, personal profiles, and photo albums, it is best described as a cross between My Space, Face Book, and a dating site…but with a twist. It is niched for those who are physically or medically disabled – and there is nothing else like it online.

Louise Maxwell, the site’s founder and administrator, has been instrumental in drastically changing the lives of its members. With close to 2400 members before its current restructure, including lawyers, pastors, psychologists, and other professionals, the site has become a support system for the disabled by the disabled – and a support for parents of disabled children.

For one mom, the site has been instrumental is helping her teenage daughter learn appropriate behaviours toward friendships. Other members in the chat room have embraced her and are helping her to better understand her growing development with relationships and she is developing new friends who understand her. Knowing that predators or suspicious individuals will be immediately removed from the site gives the mom a sense of security as her teen grows independently.

SoulfulEncounters.com is quickly building a reputation for providing a new outlook or purpose in life as members become extended family – and many have developed friendships and romance that otherwise would not have been possible. “Louise made me feel worthy and confident…not trapped and sad,” said one member. “I have never felt so good about myself in my entire life.”

Online membership ranges from age 21 to 87 with most between 40 and 55. Maxwell takes the time to discover each person’s strengths and brings it out through chat room conversations to help build self-esteem. And she is extremely protective of her online community. Spammers and scammers are quickly identified and eliminated to protect the vulnerable members.

Maxwell worked more than twenty years in medical offices surrounded by the very ill and disabled – and she was in her comfort zone. After becoming disabled herself in her late thirties due to numerous back surgeries following a car accident, she discovered that she continually had to prove she was smart and capable. Being housebound for nearly ten years, she felt isolated…and understands the needs of the disabled community first hand. “Just because you’re physically handicapped doesn’t mean that your heart and soul are. We’re empowering people to be who they want to be,” said Maxwell.

At SoulfulEncounters.com the type of disability doesn’t matter – the important thing is that everyone is regarded as an individual with unique talents and aspirations. Maxwell recognizes this in each member and strives to make everyone feel good about themselves.

“Members form a unique community in which they feel safe, accepted, and appreciated regardless of their country of origin,” said Maxwell, “because in the hearts of the disabled, no border exists.”

Business Profile: Legg’s General Store

By Susan Regier

Legg's General Store has been a family-run operation in Birr, Ontario since 1946. Son, Jack, took over the operation in 1967 and his wife Pat came on board in 1970.

What are the various products/services that you offer?

We offer eclectic giftware, gourmet foods and seasonings, seasonal flags, flavoured teas, hot sauces, Leanin' Tree cards, kitchen gadgets, Coke/Harley/John Deere/NHL memorabilia, tin signs for every occasion, a year round Christmas room…and our newest addition, an upscale print gallery in our century old home. There is such a range of products that we could not possibly name everything. Our service is simply to make our customers happy – to go above and beyond all customer service. If we don't sell a product we’ll try to find out who does.

Give a brief history of the building and store operation.

It is hard to be brief with a 100 year old building. We’re the fourteenth owners. Purchased by Jack's parents in 1946, the store has been in the Legg family for 61 years. Jack Sr. purchased the business from Etheld Harris – prior to that it changed hands frequently. Its humble beginning was in the 1830's when a Mr. McConnell purchased the property from the Canada Company. The store is famous for being a stage stop for the well known Donnelly's. The hotel on the property was a resting stop for the stage and passengers. It grew from a Post Office, to a hardware store, to a lumber yard with mill. The mill was operated by a diesel engine, which produced flour and cut lumber. Although the mill is not open to the public it still stands on the site.

What made you decide to go into this type of business?
There were so many rooms that we felt we might as well use them. Trying giftware was a long shot but as we needed more space, we expanded and grew to what we are today.

Who is your target market and how do you reach them?
Our market is everyone who has driven by for years and finally stops. We’ve had visitors from all over the world who keep coming back. Seniors who look at the old building with nostalgia in their eyes or young people who’ve never seen hardwood floors in a store. Many of our guests are going or coming to the local hospitals for appointments. We reach our customers by word of mouth, advertisement in the Daytripper, and with radio ads. We have a large sign where we advertise upcoming events within our business and community.

What do you offer that’s different from your competitors?
We offer service with a smile, a local history lesson on our century old building that was once a stop for the Donnelly Stage Line ( if asked), a lift to your car if your hands are full, loan products to local groups and schools, a safe place in the middle of a blizzard, a public washroom that may be used by all, a beautiful garden setting to sit, relax, and eat the ice cream we serve, directions for travellers, a place to browse for an hour or a day, and peace and quiet if needed. Our store is a place to leisurely shop or a place to quickly pick up that last minute gift you forgot. We can even put your gift in a beautiful gift bag with tissue and ribbons at no extra cost.

What is the biggest obstacle you’ve had to overcome to get to where you are now?
The biggest obstacle is putting life back into our 100 plus year old building. It needs a lot of maintenance, love, and commitment. What do you enjoy most about your business? Our customers and staff. How do you handle a hectic day? We take it one minute at a time, making sure all customers are served with a smile as quickly and efficiently as possible. We let them know that their business is very important to us.

How much has your business grown since the beginning?
Our business has grown from 200 sq feet to 20,000 sq feet over the past 40 years. We have grown outside from one building to three, and inside from one room to eight rooms. Our newest addition is the first floor of the adjoining century old home. If you could go back to the beginning and change something, what would it be? Starting the gift shop sooner.

Where do you see your business in 3 years?
Every year is a new adventure. We may expand and go upstairs into the five bedrooms sitting idle or just concentrate on what we have now. But you can be assured that every year there is something different happening and every day there are always changes being made. We keep everything fresh and new.

Any additional comments?
We invite all to stop in and visit us – the old building is amazing to see with its original hardwood floors throughout, including slanted floors in some rooms. This is a fine example of using space and how to turn an historical building into a viable business, while keeping the antiques, including the marble fireplace, that were once used here.

Legg's General Store is located on Highway #4 in Birr, north of London. They are open from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. from March through October and in November and December, open from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. or when the lights go out. During January and February they are open weekends only depending on the weather. For more information, call 519. 666.0759.

Profile: Lambeth Gardens Secret Garden Revealed

By Susan Regier

Nestled on the south side of Main Street, Lambeth, Janet Morton, gardener extraordinaire, has created an impressive garden sanctuary where customers can meander through nearly 250 species of plants and envision a plan for their gardens. Complete with pond, Lambeth Gardens is the only Centre in London where one can actually see how the plants would look in their backyard, and then purchase those plants on the spot.

“We’ve created a form and textured artistic approach to gardening,” said Morton. “One supplier commented he hadn’t seen anything like this in Canada. It was reminiscent of European gardens.”

With a passion for gardening, Morton had worked with one of London’s top landscaping and design centres for several years after retiring from an administrative career. Her dream became reality in 2005 when she discovered this property for sale and enlisted the help of friend, Terry Fujdala, a retired nurse with an equal passion for gardening.

“My family has been instrumental in helping me with the business as well,” said Morton. “My daughter, Natalie, has been a great asset and helps five days a week.”

Twenty-five-year-old Natalie is intellectually handicapped and loves to help people. She never tires and is the eyes and ears of the operation. Natalie loves the outdoors and the physical work involved with the Centre. She helps with plant arrangements, pricing, deadheading plants, greeting customers, and carrying purchases to their vehicles.

Lambeth Gardens sells a variety of unusual annuals and perennials, such as the new fibre optic grass, perfect for pots. Morton visits all the growers to ensure the plants are healthy. And they specialize in container gardening, finding untapped suppliers for planters and baskets that are exclusive to their shop.

Morton provides landscaping advice and demonstrates how to make impressive garden planters. She stresses organic gardening and teaches the best way to compost. And they’re competitively priced – their promotional specials consistently beat the Big Box stores.

Lambeth Gardens is located at 2368 Main Street and open seven days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday to Friday; 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Saturdays; and 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sundays.

“I enjoy what I am doing and love to help with gardening concerns,” said Morton. “But best of all is being able to work alongside Natalie and watching her blossom.”

Profile: Rolz & Sassy Babywearing Gear for Parents

By Susan Regier

Rolz & Sassy knows what savvy parents want. They know that when you hold a baby, he cries less. As it’s not practical for parents to hold their baby all day, they’ve manufactured a line of wraps and slings so Mom and Dad can wear their baby – an ideal solution that helps parents and babies grow together.

Marcia Spencer was thrilled when she first “wore” her six-month-old daughter comfortably during a two-hour hike and still had available hands to help her toddler. In fact, Spencer was so thrilled with the product that she bought the company in 2005 and has been on a mission to supply other parents with safe, versatile, and sassy babywearing gear.

Research shows that babies carried next to their mother’s body during the first few months cry 43% less, have better digestion, and have enhanced visual and auditory alertness over babies toted in infant carriers. Babywearing allows parents to hold their baby without putting excessive strain on their bodies or interfering with daily tasks.

In June 2006, Spencer renamed the company Rolz & Sassy, after the nicknames for children Roland and Sasha, to reflect her expanded product line available in stores across Canada and the U.S.

Her top products are wraps and slings. The Sassy Wrap™ is one continuous piece of fabric that is wrapped around the body to "wear" the baby. Depending on body size and baby's age, it can be tied several ways for comfort and is a perfect fit for babies with physical disabilities. The Ring Sling™ is designed for comfort with a shoulder “kick” to ensure it stays in place. It features a deep inside pocket, which is large enough to hold the essentials – a diaper, soother, and bank card.

Sassy Wraps conform to a baby’s developing spine. The baby’s weight is distributed evenly over Mom’s body and can be worn immediately after a c-section without discomfort. “Wearing your baby is easier than struggling with strollers in crowded stores,” said Spencer. “Plus, it offers the advantage of discreet nursing.”

Spencer, an experienced Early Childhood Educator, believes that carrying your baby is a need and want for child and parent. “Who doesn’t love to snuggle with a baby? There’s no better feeling than having a baby melt into your body,” said Spencer. “It’s a magical moment that babywearers get to experience all day.”

Rolz & Sassy manufactures their wraps and slings in London. They are constructed with premium textiles in a range of colours and patterns, including camouflage for Dad. Sizes are easily adjusted for newborns to pre-school-size kids. Simple instructions are included or parents can attend free babywearing workshops to learn first hand how to wear their children with sass appeal.

Pilateez.com & Balance Natural Health Clinic ...Unites Top Health Practitioners

By Susan Regier

London’s first all-natural therapeutic centre has recently opened at 1135 Adelaide Street North, Suite 115, combining the talents of four successful women under one roof at the Pilateez.com and Balance Natural Health Clinic.

Larissa Mills, owner of Pilateez.com searched for skilled practitioners in massage, acupuncture, and Chinese medicine to fulfill her vision for the centre – and found three women at the top of their fields who had a passion for their work. “We are excited to finally unite a natural health clinic and a teaching pilates studio – there is nothing comparable in London,” said Mills.

A former teacher, Mills now operates two studios under Pilateez.com – a studio for private sessions in Old North and the new location at 1135 Adelaide Street North for larger classes.

Mills is certified in several styles of Pilates and offers classes for beginners to advanced levels, including prenatal and postpartum healing classes, to develop strength, flexibility, balance, and self awareness. Pilateez.com is also a certifying studio to “train the trainer.”

“There was a need to combine natural healing with natural esthetics. It took time to find the right balance of services and the right location, but it was worth it. Our team is fully equipped to heal the body in one way or another,” said Mills.

Joining Mills is Christine Anne Frank who has operated Frank & Sense for twenty-six years, specializing in acupuncture. She is one of six cosmetic acupuncturists in Ontario and the only one located in London. She has created a patent-pending natural skin care product line personalized to body type and requirements.

Lindsay Martens is a Naturopathic Doctor who specializes in women’s health including fertility, pregnancy, and post-partum care. “The body has a powerful ability to heal itself, given the right information, environment, and support,” said Martens, who is trained in clinical nutrition, herbal medicine, homeopathic medicine, hydrotherapy, and Chinese medicine and acupuncture.

The latest addition to the Balance Natural Health Clinic is Ann Rich. Rich recently moved from Seattle, Washington after hearing about the clinic while meeting with the Olympic rowing coach in London this past summer. Rich is a Master Acupuncturist who focuses on athletes and women’s health. She has helped to improve the performance of elite athletes and weekend warriors and is now offering her skills to our city.

Pilateez.com and the Balance Natural Health Clinic opened their doors in May and celebrated with a Grand Opening event on October 20, 2006. For more information, visit their Web site at www.pilateez.com,

Using this new technology, eMage Graphics Plus serves the needs of graphic designers, advertising agencies, print shops, and other sign companies looking for working partners.

“Printing has become faster and more economical with Grand Format Printing,” said Hooda. “Years ago we recognized the need to invest in technology to stay competitive and it’s paid off. Other graphics and sign businesses have come to rely on us. It’s really a win-win scenario for everyone.”

Profile: Lovers atWork…Changing Directions

By Susan Regier

For years, computerized workstations have forced office workers to face a wall or corner. But with the latest innovation from atWork Office Furniture, we’ll see dramatic changes in the way people conduct business. “Forward-facing” has taken on a whole new meaning when it comes to working people in office environments.

Belair Office Products, an affiliated company of atWork Office Furniture, has designed and built the new forward-facing Phoenix Collection – a commercial quality line that focuses on facing computer users toward guests. Panels and desk tops are constructed of durable one inch thick melamine in various colours and come with a ten year warranty.

Over the past decades, time spent working on computers has substantially increased, but the computer’s location on desks has relatively stayed the same – on the back or to the side. Now days of facing back walls are gone as face-to-face first impressions can again take priority. Just as technology rapidly advances to meet demanding needs, this new style office furniture has been adapted to accommodate those dramatic changes.

“People are absolutely the main thing. Facing an office worker away from coworkers and guests while working on a computer screen destroys the first impression of a welcome. Others just become a bother. This is totally wrong and we want to change that,” said Rodney Lover, Director of Sales for London’s Lovers atWork store. “Our furniture is a solution that even Feng Shui supports.”

Many office designers today use the ancient Chinese art and science of Feng Shui when creating functional office spaces. This includes making sure the worker’s back is toward a corner or wall – never toward a door. Symbolically, business comes through the door, so you should never turn your back on it, and this includes co-workers as well as clients.

For more than twenty years, the atWork Office Furniture group, which includes seven locations throughout Ontario, has offered a complete line of new and used office furniture and accessories. Each location is independently owned and well established in their communities. atWork combines the names people trust with the power of a chain. Find them at www.atwork.ca.

Profile: Cheeky Monkey

By Susan Regier

After two and half phenomenal years selling unique and hard to find maternity, baby, and toddler gear online, the Cheeky Monkey has found the ideal store front location and have opened its child-friendly doors at 590 Oxford Street (at Adelaide).

“The goal from the beginning was to have a store front,” said owner Krista Williamson. “It’s taken us almost three years to find the right location and we’re excited that we’ve finally found the perfect spot.”

In March 2004, the Cheeky Monkey was launched online with a small, five-page site. Since that time, sales have grown exponentially. Williamson, a former financial planner, has become an expert Web developer by necessity. After expanding their product line, the site now contains over two hundred pages of products geared for moms, dads, and babies, and receives more than 25,000 unique visitors each month.

The Cheeky Monkey, named after her precocious son, Connor, carries unique items that resolve problems. “Feeding, sun protection, sleeping, and crying are very big concerns for moms – so we carry everything they could ever need to alleviate those concerns,” said Williamson. For many of their products, they are the only local distributor.

Cheeky Monkey’s products are still available through their Web site and at local community events, fairs, and workshops. But customers, who have driven across the province to attend their workshops, wanted a location to shop at regularly. Their store will allow for more instructional classes, including the free “Babywearing” classes.

Williamson spends countless hours searching for new and unusual products, preferring products created by other small businesses. And her endeavours have paid off...the Cheeky Monkey has been featured in Chatelaine Magazine, Pregnancy Magazine, and Pregnancy Buyer’s Guide.
Stopping in at the Cheeky Monkey is like dropping by a friend’s…welcoming and relaxing for the entire family. The Cheeky Monkey is open Monday through Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Profile: Green Valley Recycling...reducing waste in landfills.

By Susan Regier

Making London greener is a priority for the city – and it has just gotten easier and more economical with Green Valley Recycling, the only construction and demolition material recycler in the city of London.

Construction material tops the list when it comes to unnecessary recyclables going to landfills. “If all construction and demolition material was recycled, landfill sites could reduce the amount of waste by up to 25% very easily,” said Paul Aarts of Green Valley Recycling.

Green Valley Recycling, operated by Aarts and his son, Richard, has been in the works since the Fall of 2003. They have endured the lengthy approval process and are now certified by the Ministry of Environment to operate this recycling facility.

After spending forty years as the owner of a local construction company, Aarts knows the contractors and is quickly growing Green Valley Recycling with their support. He is now targeting businesses and homeowners with his convenient location by offering minimal tipping fees and long operating hours.

Green Valley Recycling is located on fifteen acres at 1200 Green Valley Road, just off Hwy. 401 and Highbury Avenue or Wellington Road. They are open from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturdays. Screened topsoil is available for sale and woodchips and aggregate materials will be available soon. They accept wood, concrete, block, asphalt, rubble, skids, brick, dirt, shingles, drywall, brush, stumps, and grass.

“Recycling is available and people should take advantage of it…recyclables should not go into landfill sites,” said Aarts. Homeowners are not allowed to place construction and renovation material, such as drywall, lumber, concrete, and shingles at the curbside, therefore Green Valley Recycling is a convenient alternative.

Space is precious at our landfills…it makes good sense to take full advantage of recycling programs to protect our environment. Green Valley Recycling is doing its part by recycling for the future.

Costs have not been spared in providing the ultimate luxuries. The modern European furnishings were custom-made to ensure the ambiance is consistent throughout.

“We opened for business in June 2005, but in reality, I opened this salon twelve years ago in my mind,” said Ahmad Osman, co-owner of Shear Elegance with his brother, Joe.

After working in the salon industry for more than a decade, the brothers developed their skills and fine-tuned the image of their spa. And when the doors finally opened, nearly 95% of their customers followed…and their success has continued. They provide the latest and most exciting beauty and fashion techniques to complement their clients’ image and lifestyle. In less than one year, they have added 900 square feet of space, for a total of 3000 square feet, and are looking at further expansions.

“We wanted our clients to be swept off their feet with the treatments they receive – and they are. We work from our hearts and give 120% every time,” said Osman. Shear Elegance offers many packages and will customize to client preferences.

“Our customers are surprised at our reasonable rates. I think they have been used to paying high fees for first class service but we don’t believe they need to. Everyone deserves to be pampered, so we keep our services affordable.”

Escape to another world – one of luxury and beauty – into the exotic oasis of Shear Elegance Salon & Spa. For more information, visit their Web site at www.shearelegance.ca.

Profile: Earth Angles...spreading their wings.

By Susan Regier

After five successful years, Earth Angels is spreading its wings and expanding the quaint little gift shop. Still located at its original location next to KFC, 1289 Commissioners Road West, Byron, the store has taken over its neighbouring store front to add new product lines, including a distinct Christmas shop.

“With the expansion, we can finally provide a specialized Christmas room to showcase our Christmas angels, Santas, snowmen, fibre optic villages and angels, tree toppers, and ornaments,” said owner Gayle Cumming. “And of course, we provide free gift wrapping to make the hectic shopping season a little easier for all our customers.”

Earth Angels is London’s only angel store, and sells every type of angel imaginable. In every nook and cranny, you’ll find angel figurines, wind chimes, jewellery, wall hangings (including the popular inspirational plaques), cards, and books…something for every age and gender (including pets) – the perfect gift for any occasion.

“Sales have grown 100% since we opened in December 2000,” said Cumming. “Byron has been a great location for us. It’s only fitting that our expansion will be completed exactly five years since our inception.”

After the holidays, the Christmas room will be transformed into a Serenity Garden Room where water fountains, angel statues and stakes, and memorial stones will be available.

“Our memorial stones are a popular way to show tribute to loved ones that have passed on. And we have pet memorial stones to honour our loyal friends, “said Cumming.

Earth Angels has drawn a faithful following over the past five years with customers coming regularly from places throughout Ontario and the U.S. “We have customers from Australia, England, and Ireland who never miss stopping by our store during their annual visits,” said Cumming.

At Earth Angels, you’ll find the perfect angelic gifts for everyone on your list, plus all the festive decorations needed to create a memorable holiday atmosphere this Christmas.

Profile: In House Logic...that's just logical!

By Susan Regier

Having a high-impact Web site that will achieve the results a business demands can be a challenge – notoriously, Web developers are either talented graphic artists or they are accomplished techno wizards. Jayme Cousins is that rare individual who combines left brain/right brain thinking and does both extremely well.

Ten years after creating his first commercial Web site in 1994, Cousins left his marketing manager position at a local software company and opened his own Web development business, In House Logic. His company stands apart from competitors as he combines a sense of style and design ability while really understanding the technology involved behind the scenes.

“I want to raise the bar of small business Web sites,” said Cousins, “by blending quality, style, and technical soundness. A small business Web site should portray a professional look. It doesn’t have to be flashy – and it’s usually better if it’s not. It does have to be clean, clear, and usable. It should portray the idea that you take your viewers seriously.”

Cousins has developed many high-profile specialty Web sites including the National Peace Foundation, Washington, DC, Mainline Notebooks, South Western Ontario, the International Federation of University Women, the London and Area Bed & Breakfast Association, and Shear Elegance Salon & Spa. He has developed online demo software delivery systems, secure client information and product/event registration Web sites, and has presented training sessions throughout North and South America.

“The goal is not to flog the latest whiz-bang technologies,” said Cousins. “Nor is it to create a work of art so demanding that it can’t survive being seen around the world by different systems. Finding the right fit for the client requires active listening and a comprehensive understanding of the possibilities.”

With so many variations in computers, Web browsers, platforms and operating systems many Web sites don’t stand up. “Not everyone is working on Internet Explorer on a Windows’ machine. You need to know the differences between Macs, Linux, and Windows, and each of their Web browsers,” said Cousins. In House Logic provides several services in addition to Web design and construction that includes online application development, technical support and consulting, and traditional marketing services such as logo design and printed materials.

Cousins advises clients to focus on their audience. “You already know and love your product or service. The job is to communicate that passion to others.”

In House Logic is the logical alternative to in-house marketing and technical support staff.

Profile: 1-800-GOT-JUNK?

By Susan Regier

The garage is overflowing.
The basement is piled high.
Who are you gonna call?
1-800-GOT-JUNK?

Since 1997, 1-800-GOT-JUNK? has grown exponentially across North America. Located in forty-six cities, London and Windsor were added to the mix in May 2003 when Andrew de Boer discovered the local franchise opportunity in Canadian Business Magazine.

“I was working for a family business in Toronto at the time – started out as a driver and left as the Director of Finance. I had grown up in London and was ready for a change. I figured this would be a good fit,” said de Boer.

So, de Boer paid the franchise fee and purchased the requisite billboard truck…and became a driver once again.

1-800-GOT-JUNK? hauls for a fee, items that businesses or homeowners no longer need. They take away anything non-hazardous that two people can lift, such as construction materials, renovation debris, yard waste, and old furniture. “So far this year, we’ve picked up 450 to 500 tons of junk – and that’s not including items salvaged or donated,” said de Boer. “Our truck arrives on time. We quote our prices up front including all labour, weight, and surcharges. And we do all the loading – you don’t even need to get it to the curb! Then, we leave your space looking better than we found it – every time!”

Sixty percent of all the junk collected is recycled. It is donated to various charities, including Goodwill and My Neighbour’s Closet. Try Recycling also receives a large portion of the “junk.” “We’ve picked up some amazing ‘junk,’” said de Boer. “Items like old steamer trunks, leather couches in good condition, and even an eighteenth century sewing machine…items too good to throw out – so we recycle or donate when we can.”

The local franchise has more than doubled their revenue since last summer. They now have two trucks operating in London and one in Windsor that services homes and businesses from Lake Erie to Lake Huron. And their Big Wig Philosophy, used by all franchises, ensures they get noticed. Forty percent of their business is a direct result of parking the mobile billboards at busy corners and waving at passers-by.

Since early summer, de Boer has been out of the truck and back in an office. The majority of his business is from residential junk removals but he’s hoping to break into the commercial arena in a big way – by going after local realtors to de-junk homes up for sale; property managers to help remove all the stuff that tenants are known to leave behind; and building contractors. With a steel box that is ten feet long, eight feet wide, and five feet high, contractors can now avoid having bins sitting in front of luxury homes.

1-800-GOT-JUNK? has taken a fragmented business, added clean shiny trucks, friendly uniformed drivers, on-time service, and up-front rates…and then blended in a culture that is young, fun, and completely focused on fast, profitable growth. The result is a brand in an industry that has never had a brand.

Visit 1-800-GOT-JUNK? to receive Ten JunkBucks for your next junk removal order.

Profile: For the Art of It

By Susan Regier

John Murch purchased For the Art of It in October 1996. The store is located at 629 Richmond Street, London, one block north of Central. They are open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. or call (519) 434-3014 for an appointment.

What are the various products/services that you offer?
Conservation framing, laminating and plaquing, original art by London area artists, and quality handcrafted gifts.

What made you decide to go into this type of business?

I liked the combination of the aesthetics of art, the craft of framing, and the element of personal service.

What is your background? (Education, training, work, etc.)

I have a university degree in Psychology and thirty years experience in social service and mental health management. My interest in art, photography, pottery, and framing related activities was avocational until I left Social Services and opened my own business.

Who is your target market and how do you reach them?

My target market is London families and businesses that appreciate quality work, personal service, and original art and gifts. I reach my customers primarily through personal referral by customers and by a visible location on Richmond Row.

What do you offer that’s different from your competitors?

All framing is done using only conservation materials designed to protect and preserve the customers’ art. Framed art on display is primarily original art by established London area artists. We carry a wide range of art in a small space, including Native Soapstone carving, glasswork, pottery, hand painted candles, sculpture, and hand painted greeting cards.

What is the biggest obstacle you’ve had to overcome to get to where you are now?

It takes a long time to develop a loyal customer base in a very competitive market, and it takes a very large customer base to be successful in the art and framing business. My biggest challenge was maintaining patience for the business to grow naturally based on the quality of my work, the quality of the original art presented by London artists, and the benefits to the customer of personal service by the owner.

What do you enjoy most about your business?

I enjoy the business interaction and friendship of my regular customers, the chance to meet new people almost every day, the focus and attention to detail required in the actual framing process, and the privilege of being surrounded by original art. The biggest enjoyment comes when someone falls in love with a piece of art that I chose and framed.

How do you handle a hectic day?

I handle a hectic day by smiling and remembering I am human. I try to stay focused on the task at hand and remember what is important – service to the customer, quality work, and having fun.

How much has your business grown since the beginning?

The business has tripled in volume since the first year.

If you could go back to the beginning and change something, what would it be?

I would have moved to a Richmond Street location earlier and I would have kept a better customer database.

Where do you see your business in 3 years?

In three years I see my business in an expanded location with a larger gallery and more work and storage space.

Any additional comments?

Owning and running any small business is a challenge, but there are a lot of us and we don’t all have to keep reinventing the wheel. We learn the game a lot faster when we network. Networking is good for business, and it is also a good way to meet some of the most interesting independent thinkers in London.
